Inspired by Pat Steir’s waterfall paintings, Falling Water at once pays homage to her work, attempts a painterly effect on cut paper, and addresses the drought conditions throughout the US impacted by climate change. Living and working in Pittsburgh at the time, the artist titled the installation as a play on word of Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater just outside of the Steel city.
In Falling Water, the man-made, rigid chain link fences contrast sharply with the natural, fluid water. Together these two motifs afford an intriguing dynamic and strategic play on density, while exploiting cut paper's inherent, reductive process to bring forth awareness of water scarcity caused by global warming.
