Comprised of intricately hand cut paper, We Are All Mountaineers is a thematic follow up of The Sea Will Come to Kiss Me (2017). The exhibition title is a spinoff of #weareallimmigrants and it reflects on the recent unprecedented shift in the US's immigration policies.
The piece We Are All Mountaineers – Exit, the first cut paper created and an ancestor for the other works, depicts a brief history of US immigration. Recurring motifs including stars, gates, tiaras, fences, and oceans seen throughout other works all stem from this piece and were installed within the gallery space in its succession.
Together these works explore, in various ways, multiple facets related to immigration: diaspora, lineage, displacement, and the rebuilding of home, and familial separation. Drawing on immigrants' personal experiences, this body of works affirms our universal desires for community, social acceptance, and belonging.
